Khmer Traditional Costume Session

Two classes of students in grade 2 and 3 in the Khmer School at Wat Buddharangsi Melbourne participate in a session on Khmer culture before the Khmer New Year, the Year of the Dog.

Shiny silk materials of different patterns and lovely colours are displayed in the classroom. Students, some sitting at the desk and some on the floor, watch with interest while Mrs Muntha Crowe talks about the materials made from Khmer silk.

Having learned to identify the different patterns and style of the materials, the students are asked to get up and try something they have not learned before, how to wear the kben pants. A demonstration is on a boy who is very keen to get dressed in the kben. Well he looks good in that!

Now it is the turn of the others. In pairs, the students from the two classes get up, one dresses the other in the kben.

Indeed they look fantastic, with a krama (a typical Khmer scarf) as an accessory, to match the kben colour, for both the boys and the girls.
